The importance of New York’s Pride week is surely self-evident by now, but in case
you’ve been living in a dark closet all these years, you should know that this is the
Pride that started all Prides. Three days of rioting and clashing with police in the
Greenwich Village led eventually to a march down Fifth Avenue that set the pattern
for marches like it all over the world. Although we’ve become much more visible
through the years, it’s a nice reminder of what we had to do just to be noticed
by the outside world to march through Manhattan with dykes, leather queens,
gay families, gay cops, gay politicians, gay…everybody. Cap off the week with
the world-famous Pier Dance, where 7,500 dance overlooking the Hudson River.
Once the fireworks go off at the end of the night with a pink Empire State Building
in the distance, you’ll know that New York is still the gay capital of the world.
