There’s no doubt that the Invasion at Fire Island Pines made the Fourth of July
resonate even louder and prouder for the gay community. Like Stonewall, it
started with a snub of rudeness that forced one of us to put her foot down and
say “Enough!” This yearly celebration of the day that a drag queen was refused
service at a Pines harbor establishment has become much more than just the story
of a small boatload of drag queens ferrying over to teach the rude proprietor a
lesson he would never forget. It’s a vivid display of gaudy fabulousness. A day for
most everyone in Cherry Grove to throw on a big, old ugly dress and stake their
claim on what is now one of the gayest harbors on Earth. "We've come a long
way, Baby!" they all seem to be screaming, so don’t be afraid to demand what is
rightfully yours.
