The Castro takes Halloween very seriously. Known as “gay Christmas,” there has
been trouble in the past when too many drunken teenagers overran the streets,
leading to the deaths of nine people in 2006. But last year saw a dramatic increase
in security for the street party, and even though the locals grumbled a bit, it’s now
safe and fun again for, as they say, kids of all ages. At the end of the day, any party
that attracts that much drama is bound to be good.

PALM SPRINGS PRIDE
November 1-2, 2008
Palm Springs, CA
Drawing crowds of up to 40,000 to the Palm Springs area each year, this Pride
grew organically from the womyn’s community in this desert oasis. Now consisting
of a festival and a parade, this inclusive event is celebrating gay marriage this year
with the theme “Winds of Change – Celebrating Family.” PS Pride represents an
economic boon to the area, so it has become a much-appreciated addition to the
local culture.

WHITE PARTY
November 26 - December 1, 2008

The Grande Dame of Circuit Parties still brags confidently that it is one of the oldest,
largest, and most opulent events in the gay universe. 100% of the proceeds
go to benefit South Florida’s Care Resource, which has been working on the front
lines of the AIDS crisis for 25 years. Choosing white as their theme color in 1985,
the founders wanted this party not only to raise much-needed money to fight
AIDS, but also to symbolize purity and elegance—something not every party
can stake a claim on, to be sure. But White Party serves up elegance and much
more, turning the stunning Villa Vizcaya into a white wonderland to celebrate and
remember the victories and hardships we have seen in the last several decades.
